Vernita Elaine Haig

Vernita E. Haig, age 90 of Westland, passed away on October 18, 2023.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 2, 1932 to her parents, the late Maude (née Brown) and George Haig.

Loving and devoted mother of Kathryn Thom, Richard (Janice) Weidman, John (Debbie) Weidman, Michael Weidman, Patricia (Scott) Pemberton and James (Kelley)Weidman.

Proud grandmother of Jimmy (Deana) Cavan, David Cavan, Jason Weidman, Joey Weidman, Andrew (Courtney) Weidman, Katy (Michael) Thomas, Daniel Weidman, and Jeffrey (Lisa) Wegehaupt ; great-grandmother of Everly, Anna Rose, Ethan, Owen, Aubrey, Jean, Teddy and Emelia.  Vernita was preceded in death by her great-grandson Everette, and granddaughter Jennifer Rose Weidman.

Vernita was described by her family as a “get up and go person”.  She was blessed with energy as well as wonderful artistic skills.  She was smart and determined in every task she tackled and made friends easily. She also had a bit of the  “Wandering spirit” in her.

Vernita owned and loved riding horses.  Just being around horses made her feel energized.  Perhaps her horses helped in the formation of her “get-up-and-go” personality.  Horses are known to be social creatures and most likely communicated and encouraged her in some way to socialize, have fun and make new friends wherever she chose to “get-up-and-go" to.

Vernita’s creative side was expressed in her beautiful voice.  She was a longtime member of the “Sweet Adelines” – a worldwide and one of the world’s largest singing organizations for women.  She so enjoyed her music and the connection and sense of community singing together with others.  But most of all, it was just fun and a great way to make friends! In her 60’s she became an accomplished tennis player, winning several individual and team medals

Her creative side was not limited only to singing.  Vernita was an artist.  She loved to paint, work with ceramics, knit and crochet and created some beautiful pieces.  And at the end of the day, you could truly appreciate the beauty she was able to express from her heart.
