Un Chong Miller

Chong Miller 86 of Canton went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Chong was born in Pyongyang Korea on July 3, 1937.

She was the beloved daughter of Chung Hansuk and Han Sukhoon. She graduated in Seoul Korea where she played basketball, speed skating, and track (relay races). Chong won the white glove award in her school dormitory. She worked as a 2nd grade teacher, and the Embassy in Korea. She used her seamstress entrepreneur skills in the U.S. Army after marrying Frederick Karl Miller from Detroit Michigan on March 13th, 1965.

Chong came to the Westland/Canton area in 1970. In which she resided as a homemaker and various other odd jobs, like a florist, hostess, dry cleaners and her favorite was Marianne’s clothing and a Nanny.

Chong was a member of the Korean American Woman’s Association which was her community. Chong was well known for hosting Wednesday lunches with the Korean Ladies and rallying people to fill the churches. Chong had a natural gift for knowing where she was and geographical locations, the place didn’t seem to inhibit her whether she was near home or far. She was a natural scout for new terrains and was a pioneer in finding local post offices, cleaners, grocery stores and churches. Within a week she would lead Fred around their new surroundings knowing every street light, short cut and the times of day for heavy traffic.

Chong was often found bringing house hold supplies or watermelons for friends and family. She doesn’t enter a home empty handed nor could you leave her home empty handed. She loved to serve and was an extraordinary cook, but when she said say, “when.” You’d better say when two scoops before you wanted too, because you’d always get two great big extra scoops.

Chong was known for a good bargain or great sale, she went shopping weekly to Jacobson or Hudson with Monica and Howard Kim, also known as the three stooges.

Chong loved her music, dancing and road trips, her favorite was Mackinaw Island-Grand Hotel and a drive along Lake Superior, in which in those moments she felt like a movie star.

She cherished her time telling stories of the old country and traditions of Korea, she was the fire starter and would be the one to get the party started. Chong was one to be remembered where ever she went, from Mackinaw Island to Jamaica. In her latter years she was remembered for her return visits at St. Joes, as the woman that escaped her bed to go to the bathroom.

She fought hard in her life, she fought hard to succeed, she stood strong in her faith and in her believes. She even sustained life with a strong will to survive, we felt her spirit leave the room, and fragrance welled up to take our breathe away even as she breathed her last.

Chong is survived by her younger brother Ingul, daughters Nancy Richards and Patty (Al) Iafrate. Grandchildren Melissa (Will) Waters, Chandler Hawley, Joshua Richards, Paige Hawley, Great grandchild Kristine Waters.
