Born on May 22, 1939, in Wyandotte, Michigan, Thomas was the son of Gustav and Doris Szeles. He grew up alongside his siblings Richard (Patricia) Szeles, Shirley (the late Richard) Knight, and was preceded in death by his brothers David and Daniel.
Thomas earned his Bachelor of Science and education degree in teaching and went on to receive his Master's in Humanities from the University of Detroit. He went on to dedicate his life to education—both professionally and personally. As an English teacher with Garden City Public Schools, he inspired generations of students before retiring in 1999. Known for his unwavering commitment to proper grammar, he never missed a chance to correct your English on the spot—a testament to his passion for language and learning.
For 65 years, Thomas shared a loving, devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Angeline. Together they raised three daughters: MaryBeth Szeles, Sharon Szeles, and the late Maureen (Szeles) Meo. His legacy continues through his granddaughter Emily (Chad) Treadway and great-grandchildren Hadley, Stella, and Reid Treadway. He also held a special place in his heart for John (Marina) Verhulst, an exchange student who became like a son.
Beyond the classroom and family life, Thomas had a deep appreciation for history and craftsmanship. He was a passionate collector of antiques—especially Roseville Pottery—and could often be found exploring antique stores in search of new treasures. Thomas was known for his quick wit, warmth, and unforgettable presence. A wonderful friend to many, he had a unique ability to make people feel seen and remembered. His friendships spanned decades and distances; he will be deeply missed by countless friends whose lives he touched.
