Stella Elaine Smith

May 30, 1926 — January 19, 2021

Stella Elaine Smith passed away January 19, 2021, at the age of 94.

She was born May 30, 1926, the fourth of seven children, to English immigrants, the late Bert and Ada Phillips, who arrived in America in the early 1900’s to start a new life and raise their family.

Stella was a lifelong resident of Plymouth. She married Richard Smith in 1945, and he preceded her in death after 52 years of marriage.

Stella was a loving mother to Larry (Pat McNulty) Smith, Gary Smith and Linda (Eric) Durham; beloved grandmother to Melanie Morris, Kara Durham Carter and Craig Durham; and great-grandmother to Amaia, Samantha, Raymond and Elliott.

Following her retirement from Michigan Bell in the early 1980’s, Stella continued an active life, organizing social events, attending church, continuing her lifelong friendships and making new friends through the years. She was past president of the local CWA Retirees Council from 1991-2002, volunteered at the Angela Hospice for more than a decade following her husband’s death, and organized a children’s coat drive every year – well into her 90’s.

In addition to her husband, Stella was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Molly Phillips, Douglas Phillips, Charles Phillips, Ronald Phillips and Betty Campbell.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Stella is survived by a sister, Shirley Scrimger, numerous nieces and nephews and very special friend and companion, Wayne Glass.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic no visitation or funeral are planned at this time. A private family memorial service will be held in May at the Plymouth First United Methodist Church.
