Ram Singh Sandhu of Northville, Michigan, passed away at the age of 78 on December 7, 2022. The fourth of five children, Ram was born in Lyallpur (Punjab) India on March 8, 1944 to his late parents, Santokh Singh and Chand Kaur Sandhu.
Ram was only two years old when he lost both his father and sister during the 1947 Partition of India, leaving his mother to raise the family with the help of his uncles. At the age of 17, he left home to begin his journey, learning to support himself with a strong work ethic, persistence, and determination.
Ram was introduced to Bapuji Arjan K. Singh through a mutual friend. This led to his arranged marriage to Kashmir in 1967, and subsequently the birth of their three children in Faridabad, India. With Bapuji’s support, his dream of coming to the United States came to fruition in 1975. Upon his arrival, he started working with various automotive companies in Detroit before landing a position with Ford Motor Company. He retired from Ford as a tooling manager after almost 25 years of service.
Ram was one of the founding members of NYX, Inc. alongside his elder brother Chain Sandhu. He stood beside his brother from the beginning stages of NYX and through its growth. After retirement, under his leadership, NYX became a self-sustaining source for all their assembly & automation fixtures. He was instrumental in introducing sensor technologies, robotics and vision systems to NYX Manufacturing.
Ram was a loving and caring husband to his wife of 55 years. He was a wonderful father who taught his children to be loving, compassionate, strong, and hard-working. He believed one of his greatest accomplishments was to provide a college education for his children. His most treasured role in life was being a grandfather.
Ram was a gregarious man with a kind and generous heart. His laughter was contagious, and his smile lit up the room. He was a verbose and passionate storyteller. Ram most loved being surrounded by his family and friends while sharing good food and a glass of wine or a great margarita. He loved to travel and enjoyed learning about different cultures. His favorite pastimes were gardening and taking long walks.
Ram was preceded in death by his brothers, Raghbir S. Sandhu and Chain S. Sandhu. Ram is survived by his beloved wife, Kashmir, and their three children Ravinder (Amy) Sandhu, Kanwal (Paul) Gill, and Randeep (Aaron) Reid as well as his grandchildren Dylan Sandhu, Shane Sandhu, Sufna Gill, Avneet Gill, and Kareena Reid.
