Matthew Franz Dobos
January 25, 1984 – February 18, 2024
Matthew Dobos, age 40, of Schaumburg, Ill., passed away on February 18, 2024. Matt was surrounded by his parents and siblings as he entered into rest after a long illness.
Matt was born the middle of three children to Otto and Carol Dobos of Livonia, Mich., where he grew up and attended Livonia Churchill High School’s Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) program, graduating in 2002. Matt was full of creative mischief and could always be counted on to get a room laughing. Whether through self-deprecation, physical comedy, or a slightly off-color joke, Matt’s sense of humor was infectious. He could make you laugh in spite of yourself. After high school, Matt started a career in auto mechanics, enjoying the craft of making broken things work again.
In 2007, Matt relocated to Chicago and began a new chapter of his life that would eventually find him working many years in medical and health care settings. He was fascinated by medicine and felt strongly about caring for people who were ill, often bonding closely with patients he was tending to or the health care providers he worked with.
Matt liked hobbies that made use of his creative energy and his hands. He enjoyed working in the yard or trying a new recipe, and he especially loved exploring the cuisine of his Hungarian heritage. He always believed he would have been fast friends with his rough-and-tumble farmer grandfather, “Duke,” his mom’s father, who predeceased him. He treasured a violin his grandpa Dobos made by hand.
The greatest treasure of Matt’s life, and that which gave him purpose, was his two children, Hannah and Ethan. Matt relished every minute he spent with his kids. He loved taking them on walks to the local park to feed the ducks. He was most energized by teaching them to discover new things, and sharing his love of practical jokes with them. Matt especially enjoyed taking the kids to his parents’ house in Michigan to swim in the summer. Their laughs and their love kept him going, especially as he became unwell.
Matthew is survived by his children, Hannah Maragaret Dobos, age 9, and Ethan Franz Dobos, age 7, and their mother Dana, of Schaumburg, Ill.; his parents Otto Franz and Carol (Raub) Dobos, of Livonia, Mich.; his brother Andrew Dobos (Brian Sandoval) of Boston; his sister Amanda Frye (Bryce), and niece Harper Grace, of Los Angeles; as well as many dear and close friends.
Matt’s family has established education funds for his children and welcomes your support of a bright future for the two little people whom he loved so dearly. If you are so moved, please consider contributing on a gofundme page we have created for this purpose.
Friends and family will gather to remember and celebrate Matt’s life with a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth (Michigan).
