Jen-Shan Weng

Jen-Shan Weng, age 89 of Canton, Michigan passed away on August 8, 2026. He was born on March 15, 1937 in Yizhu, Chiayi, Taiwan to his parents, the late Tu-Quiang Weng and Nuan (née Guo) Weng. Jen-Shan is the beloved and devoted husband of the late Lie-Hua (née Lee) Weng; loving father of two daughters, Julia Weng (husband Ian Wall) and Alice Weng; and proud grandfather of Jacob Wall and Zachary Wall. Jen-Shan grew up on his family farm in Taiwan. His talent for and pursuit of mathematics gained him entrance to competitive academic programs at Tainan Normal School and National Taiwan Normal University. He met his wife, Lie-Hua, while they were both teaching at Kaohsiung Girls Senior High School. They would be married for more than 60 years.

A scholarship led him to the United States for a Ph.D. in statistics. Deciding there would be more opportunities for his family here, he adopted the U.S. as his home and built a successful career with the Internal Revenue Service as a computer programmer. Firmly believing in the power of education, he continued to teach mathematics part-time at his alma mater, Wayne State University, for much of his professional career. Jen-Shan took pride in his work and the life he built along the way. Yet, beyond his professional accomplishments, his greatest legacy will be the family he leaves behind.

He is predeceased by his wife, father, mother, four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughters, grandsons, younger brother Ren-Mu Tsai, and numerous nieces and nephews. His generosity, spirit, and hearty appreciation for a good meal shared by loved ones will live on through the family he leaves behind and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
