James Earl Shelley

James Earl Shelley, age 89 of Farmington Hills passed away on August 9, 2026.

Jim was born in Abbeville, Alabama on March 25, 1937 to his parents the late Tessie Lee (née Hunt) and Harvey Shelley. He is the beloved and devoted husband of 37 years to Benita (née Gibson) Shelley; loving father of James Earl (Donna) Shelley, Jr., Christina (Steve) Hand and Buffey Cortis; proud grandfather of ten grandchildren – Tiffany, Joshua, Megan, Jonathan, Sarah, Matthew, Kandice, Blake, Taylor and Kolby and several great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Shelley and daughter Sabrina Brock.

From his younger years racing stock cars to a career spanning more than 40 years in the automobile industry, Jim shared a lifelong passion for cars. He loved everything about them—the excitement, the craftsmanship, and the memories they created along the way. His love for automobiles remained with him throughout his life, and he took particular pride in his beloved 1996 Chevrolet Silverado, which he still owned and treasured. That truck was more than just a vehicle; it was a reflection of a passion that had been a part of Jim for much of his life. Whether behind the wheel, or simply talking about them, his enthusiasm was unmistakable and was a part of what made him who he was.

May Jim’s memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him. He will remain forever in our hearts and always in our memories.
