James M. Carney, O.D.

Jim Carney passed peacefully August 28, 2026 after a serious stroke. Married to Jan for 62 years, parents of two precious children and grandparents to three cherished girls, we have had blessed lives together. Tricia inherited his creativeness: he expressed it when making stained-glass windows and she exhibited hers in photography, painting and pottery. Brian inherited Jim's mechanical skill: Jim repaired clocks and machines while Brian mastered automobiles and built a Mustang as a teenager. All were athletes in track but, in addition, Jim swam, Tricia plays soccer and Brian plays hockey. The grandchildren also exhibit Jim's traits: Lily inherited his dancing grace, Celia favors his love of travel, and Mia features his swimming and track prowess.

Both children have wonderful partners. Zach Schafer is Tricia's soul mate with a big heart and two dear children, Lily and Linas. Brian married Lisa, his treasure and soul mate who helps him in his practice, makes his life meaningful, and enriches our family with love and many get-togethers.

Jim loved the water. Spending childhood at a lake cottage, swimming in high school, and chartering a sailboat with dear friends in the Caribbean made him so happy. He also loved fishing, both in Florida and in Michigan. He also found much pleasure baking bread and his fabulous rolls. Except for corn, he did not care for vegetables.

Jim was born on December 4, 1941 to the late Dr. Elmore and Winifred (Draper) Carney in the five-bed hospital on Main Street in Plymouth on the day the Penn Theatre opened. He deeply loved Plymouth and, we have lifelong Plymouth friends who enrich our lives. Jim was a third generation Optometrist after his grandfather, Dr. Charles Draper and his father, Dr. Elmore Carney. Brian followed his path and became a fourth generation Optometrist. So, Plymouth has had this family providing eye care for over 126 years.

We will cherish and miss his wisdom, sense of humor, quick wit, gentleness, and steadfast support. He is preceeded in death by his parents, Dr. Elmore and Winifred Carney and brother, Don. He leaves his wife, Jan, daughter Tricia Carney, son, Dr. Brian and wife (Lisa) Carney, grandchildren Lily, Celia, and Mia and sister-in-law, Julianne Carney.
