Irving Feldman

Irving "Irv" Feldman, 97, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, in Westland, Michigan. A beloved musician, educator, veteran, and family man, Irv's remarkable life spanned nearly a century of music, service, and joy.

Born on October 9, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, Irv grew up in a vibrant city that would become the backdrop for much of his musical journey. He graduated from Cass Technical High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Wayne University (now Wayne State University). His academic pursuits continued with a Master of Music from Wayne State University and post-graduate studies at the University of Michigan.

Professionally known as Irv Fields, he was a gifted clarinetist and saxophonist who brought music to life across Michigan and beyond. During the 1950s through the 1970s, Irv performed extensively throughout the Detroit area. He was a member of the Fisher Theatre Orchestra, contributing to Broadway productions and local performances, and also played with the Detroit Concert Band. His musical talents later took him to Phoenix, Arizona, and California's Central Coast before he returned to Michigan in 1991. Even into his nineties, Irv remained an active performer with the Plymouth Community Band, where he was often featured as a soloist until 2024.

In addition to his performance career, Irv was a dedicated music educator. Over more than five decades, he taught elementary music and band, high school band and marching band, college-level courses, and private lessons. His passion for teaching left an indelible mark on generations of students.

Irv also served his country with distinction as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. For three years, he directed music and band programs on military bases in Turkey and France, continuing his lifelong commitment to sharing music wherever he went.

Irv's life was rich not only in professional accomplishments but also in personal joys. He was a devoted husband to his late wife Trudy Feldman and a loving father to his cherished daughter Cathy Feldman-Duncan and her husband Alex Duncan. He also held deep affection for his beloved niece Sheila Alvarez-Schultz. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Those who knew Irv remember him as larger than life-a man whose presence filled every room he entered. He was known for his sharp wit, engaging storytelling, and boundless knowledge drawn from years of travel and performance. A wonderful conversationalist with a generous spirit, Irv gave regularly to charity and maintained lasting friendships throughout his life. His sense of humor and adventurous nature made him unforgettable.

Outside of music, Irv enjoyed cooking elaborate meals, tending to his garden, traveling far and wide, and cheering on the Michigan Wolverines and professional football teams with enthusiasm.

Raised in a Jewish household and Bar-Mitzvahed at age thirteen, Irv later embraced Messianic Judaism-a reflection of his spiritual journey that paralleled the richness of his life experiences.
