Gheorghe Kovacs

Gheorghe Kovacs Sr. was born on April 27, 1931 in Dijir, Bihor, Romania and died September 21, 2023 in Canton, MI surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old.

Dearest husband of Maria, and late Matilda (1st wife); loving father of George (Elena) Kovacs, Lidia (George) Herman, Ruben Kovacs, Cornel (Elena) Kovacs, John (Aurica) Kovacs, Benjamin (Adriana) Kovacs, Daniela (Calin) Derecichei; brother of Ana, Ioan(Ionica), Gavrila, Vasile (Loți).

Gheorghe was a proud grandfather to 20 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 19 great-grandchildren:

David (Angela) & their children, Emily, Ezra, Elliot and Esme; Danny (Daniela) & their children, Levy and Seth;

Diana (George) Milian & their children, Tristan, Julian, Logan, and Dash; John Michael; Sarah (Joey) Polocoser & their children, Mason, Eliana, Josephine; Lisa (Peter) Iascurschi & their children, Elijah, Ezekiel, Eleanor, Ethan Emmanuel (Alice) & their children, Ephraim, Adelina, Jonathan, Jacob, Caleb; Amanda (Samuel) Both, Timothy (Alexandra) Kovacs, Christopher, Daniel, Emily, Nicole, Elizabeth; Sara (Sam) Gafencu, Anthony (Abby) Derecichei, and Matthew

Gheorghe (Bunu) was not only blessed with years in his life, but life in his years. Right up to the very last weeks of his life, we saw and felt his joy in the way he spoke and interacted with John, Aurica and their kids.

He was always known for his sharp wit, sincere smile and love for the Lord.

Over four decades ago, Gheorghe came to the United States with hopes and dreams to provide a better life for his family. He and Matilda worked hard, served faithfully at Alleluia Romanian Pentecostal Church and modeled a life of sacrifice and courage, which in turn, blessed each of their seven children. Gheorghe was living, breathing proof of the goodness and faithfulness of God.

We are forever grateful for the 92 beautiful years that he blessed us with “Bunu” (Gheorghe). And, while we are heartbroken and saddened, we rejoice knowing that he is reunited in Heaven with his love, Matilda, his siblings and his first-born son George who went to be with the Lord in December of 2021.

Bunu, we love you, we will miss you and we look forward to once again being reunited in glory.
