Charles Edwin Angell, of Plymouth, MI, died peacefully on January 18, 2026 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Livonia surrounded by his family. He was 83.
Charlie was born November 11,1942 in Detroit to the late Harry S. and Soledad Angell (née de Sostoa). He grew up in Beverly Hills and attended Birmingham High School, but his true alma mater was the University of Detroit. There, he was a member of Theta Xi, earned a degree in Business and Finance (1964) and met the love of his life and future wife, Kathleen (née Zanglin).
A consummate salesman and connector, he worked his entire career as an independent manufacturers’ representative in the automotive industry, founding AMS Incorporated. He loved making deals and never truly retired. His work ethic was unprecedented.
Charlie was generous with his time and resources, and together with Kathleen, was a well-known volunteer and fundraiser for local Catholic institutions, including the University of Detroit, the Pope Francis Center, Loyola High School, and others. If you knew Charlie, you knew about his causes and you probably donated. He and Kathleen were active parishioners at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church.
He was passionate about Detroit Titan basketball and had an unwavering belief, season after season, that March Madness was within their grasp. For 50 years, Charlie rarely missed a home game, where he was known to be a spirited spectator (which some would say is an understatement). Attending games was a family tradition across generations, and if the team played well, you might get to go to Buddy’s on the way home. To this day, you’ll find many of Charlie’s closest friends roaming Calihan Hall on game days, meeting in the Club to review game stats, bad calls, and 2nd half strategy. He was President of the Titan Club from 1997-99.
He was a resident of downtown Plymouth, where he and Kathleen raised their family and where many of his children and grandchildren still live. And from the 1970s until recently, he and Kathleen spent portions of each summer on the Georgian Bay in Canada. Decades of family memories were made at "the Bay,” and Charlie never tired of its natural beauty or their lively circle of friends there.
Charlie was a long-time member of the Detroit Athletic Club, where he worked out at 6 a.m. three days a week and was a regular attendee of Monsignor Zenz’ early morning mass. We’re sure his fellow members never tired of hearing about Charlie’s children and grandchildren, about whom he glowed with pride.
Charlie lived a principled, disciplined life, embodying the Catholic values on which he was raised and that he tried to impart to his family. He had a keen sense of right and wrong – and would tell you so – but his humility, warm smile, and poor comedic timing were disarming, and he was beloved.
Charlie loved to dance, in particular with his wife, for whom his love and devotion were infinite. This August, they were to celebrate 60 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, “Pops” is survived by his sons Marty Angell (Amy) and J.P. Angell (Alanna), both of Plymouth, MI; his son Christopher Angell (Susan) of Winchester, MA; his daughter Julie Angell Bednark (Michael) of Brooklyn, NY; his 15 grandchildren, Andrew (Abbie), Owen, Abigail, Isabella, Charlie, Teddy, Miles, Olivia, Liam, Beatrice and Mira Angell, Evan Maurer (Scott) and Katherine, Victoria and Leif Bednark; 4 great-grandchildren; his 4 siblings, H. Thomas Angell, James R. Angell, Robert Angell (Rachelle) and Mary Ann Winnega; his nieces Therese Gorski and Amy Doran, and many other nieces, nephews and extended family.
