Carter Bryant Raymond, a distinguished engineer, passionate car enthusiast, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, in Plymouth, Michigan. Born on November 20, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, to loving parents Margaret and Harold Raymond, Carter’s remarkable life was marked by dedication, innovation and an enduring love for the automotive world.
Beyond his professional and automotive interests, Carter’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Bette who stood by his side through the years. He also leaves behind his cherished step-children, Kimberly Ellis and Fred Bauer who remember him with fondness and respect. His grandchildren, Kendall Ellis and Alexis Ashby carry forward his legacy with pride. Also survived by his brother John Raymond. Carter was preceded in death by his step-daughters Nora Bauer and Lisa Lewandowski and by his beloved dog, "Precious". Additionally, Carter was a devoted nephew and godson to Henry and Clara Ford, connecting him intimately to one of the most significant families in American automotive history.
Raised in a pioneering family, Carter was heir to a legacy that shaped the automotive landscape of Michigan. The Raymond family proudly owned the State’s first gas station and established Raymond Auto, the very first Ford dealership in Michigan. This heritage deeply influenced Carter who carried forward the family’s commitment to excellence and community.
Educated with distinction, Carter graduated from the Culver Military School before pursuing higher education where he earned a Masters in Math from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Engineering from the University of Virginia. His rigorous academic pursuits laid a strong foundation for his professional career leading to a fulfilling tenure at Ford Motor Company. His work there was not just a job, but a labor of love allowing him to intertwine his career with his fervent passion for car racing.
Carter was a proud owner of a 427 Cobra Jet alongside many other classic cars symbolizing both his affection for automotive history and his appreciation for craftsmanship and speed. His close friendships with automotive legends Jack Rousch and Carroll Shelby spoke volumes about his standing in the racing community and his deep-rooted involvement in the sport.
Carter’s life will be honored with a Graveside Service at Oakwood Cemetery located at 333 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan on Friday, March 27, 2026. The service will begin at 2:00 P.M. and conclude at 3:00 P.M. providing family, friends and admirers a moment of reflection and farewell.
