Gerald Ostoin

December 29, 1943 — October 3, 2015

Dear husband of Janet Loy-Ostoin of 20 years, lovingly remembered by his family; daughter Megan, stepdaughter Nicki Williams DOnofrio, stepson Mark Williams along with their spouses and his four adored grandchildren: Max, Sam, Lola and Violet. Gerald is also survived by his loving brother, Keith Ostoin. He was born in Wyandotte, Michigan and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He attended Ferris State University, Wayne State University and earned a BS in education from Eastern Michigan University. In addition, he earned his MA in secondary curriculum and administration from Eastern Michigan University. Jerry began his career in 1967 as a high school teacher and later became an assistant principal at the junior high in Willow Run Public Schools. In 1974 he came to Plymouth Canton Community Schools as an assistant principal and was principal of Salem High School from 1986 until his retirement in 2008. Jerry had a great passion for Salem High School and was truly admired by staff and students. He was a person who embodied being a Salem Rock. The love he felt for his school was returned by the fierce loyalty of his staff. Big Daddy was the name on his school mailbox, a fitting title for a man who was a father to hundreds of teachers, staff members and students. Jerry had a great love for all types of music. He was an accomplished percussionist and throughout his life played in different groups ranging from rock-n-roll bands to a student group called The Bongo Boys. His other passions included boating, cruising in his Salem blue corvette, U of M football and above all, his family. Friends may visit at Schrader-Howell Funeral Home in Plymouth, Michigan on Saturday October 17th from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. A Memorial Service will begin at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jerrys honor: Educational Excellence Foundation 454 S. Harvey Street Plymouth, MI 48170 www.eefforkids.org
