Frederick Francis Schmitt

Frederick F. Schmitt, 93 of Plymouth, Michigan and Naples, Florida passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 28, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan to Urban and Evelyn Schmitt. He married the love of his life, Mercedes Kecich in 1947. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years and his son, Terry.

He is survived by his daughter, Carole (Brian) Rossiter, Grandsons, Shawn, Kevin (Jeanette) and Jordan Rossiter. He was Great-Grandfather to Ashley Rossiter and Lauren Rossiter. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Virginia Dillman, niece, Laura ( Paul) Olsen and nephew, Eric (Diane) Olsen.

Fred was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in England, France, Belgium,Holland, and Germany with the 554th Engineers Heavy Pontoon Battalion of the 9th Army. He was a member of a battalion that helped build bridges across the Meuse and Roer Rivers and the Elbe Canal. The location of this group was so secret that its achievements could not be mentioned during the war and revealed only after it ended. They participated in battles in Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. The unit's 400 men accumulated 25 Purple Hearts of which one was earned by Fred. This was among a total of 7 Medals and Decorations that he received during the war.

He was employed by Gulf Oil and was a Real Estate Agent in Northville, Michigan.

He will be dearly missed by his friends and his family- all of whom he treasured and loved.

There will be a Memorial Visitation on Saturday, November 19th at Schrader-Howell Funeral Home in Plymouth, Michigan from 2 to 4 pm.

A service with military honors followed by interment will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
