Elizabeth McCully

October 13, 1919 — March 9, 2020

Elizabeth Ann McCully, age 100, of Manchester and formerly of Plymouth, passed away on March 9, 2020. She was born in Detroit, MI on October 13, 1919 to the late Louis and Leah Traeger. On August 14, 1942 she married William Alexander McCully, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children, Suzanne (late Tom) Christensen, Janet (Jim) Haarbauer, William (Mary) McCully and Leah (Larry) Sweet; 11 grands—Jennifer (Kenneth) Bell, Justin Christensen, Megan Pillsbury (Murat Basdinkci), Leanne (Gregg) Weaver, Elizabeth (Joseph) Castillo, William (Megan) McCully, Andrew (Mame) McCully, Katherine (David) Hodgson, James (April) Haarbauer, Emilee (Jeff) Miller and Lucas Sweet; and 13 greats—Lucas, Maxwell, Carter and Kaylyn Weaver, Charlotte and Theodore McCully, Vera and Frederick Castillo, Callan and Mara McCully, Garrett and Alice Hodgson. and Chance Haarbauer.

The daughter of a carpenter, Betty grew up in Detroit and fondly remembered carefree romps with her two bothers on their grandparents’ Wisconsin farm. She loved animals and flowers, but perhaps most of all, the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, where she spent every summer for over 60 years.

Amazing, awesome, loving and beloved, Betty was a voracious reader, an avid game player (bridge, pinocle and Scrabble topping the list), an easy travel companion, and an exceptional hugger. She relished the chaos of little ones, listened well to the angst of young adults, and easily made friends of strangers. She was generous with her time, whether it was volunteering at the Plymouth Historical Museum, wheeling veterans around the V A Hospital in Ann Arbor, planning programs for the United Methodist Women, or fielding calls requesting rides through FISH of Plymouth-Canton (until age 99!).

Always open to new ideas and engaged with the universe, Betty lived her life with grace and gratitude. There is no doubt that her spirit dances on through the countless lives she touched in the century of her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Plymouth Historical Museum, the Humane Society of Huron Valley, or a charity of choice. To keep everyone safe and healthy, we are postponing the Memorial Service to a later date.
